Not many people remember Kareena Kapoor doing a film called Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai. But she did so, since she had the ‘chocolate girl’ looks to perform the role of Pooja Saxena in the movie. This was also the debut of another Kapoor, Tusshar Kapoor who is not related to Kareena. However, it was due to this movie that Tusshar and Kareena formed a long lasting friendship and Tusshar gained a much needed break in Bollywood even as he was the scion of Jeetendra and one of the members of the Balaji Telefilms, a production house headed by his sister and famous TV show maker Ekta Kapoor.
The movie released in May 2001, and was directed by Satish Kaushik and produced by Vashu Bhagnani. Perhaps it was the reputation of these two people in the Hindi film industry that they had gained in the 90s, which resulted in the movie being a ‘hit’ in the box office. The plot development of the film was close to zero, and had no significant meaning as such to a normal human brain. Pooja Saxena is a young man who Karan, the character of Tusshar Kapoor has a glance at when he wanders across the streets of Mumbai, after being kicked out of his house by his father Krishna, played by Dalip Tahil since both of them had a dispute about Karan choosing music over his family business as his profession.
But miracles do happen, and Karan manages to find Pooja in a different city where he goes with his uncle. His long search finally comes to an end, but both of them suffer from a car accident. Karan saves Pooja but he fell off a cliff and miraculously survived. Then Pooja finds Karan and both of them begin a friendship. But through the songs and a range of feelings shown, they fall in love with each other. Their marriage was on the cards even as Pooja has to travel to the US for further studies, at the end of the movie.
Rightly so, Kareena did not win any awards for this performance which was average. Since then, she has avoided to play the ‘college girl’ type roles and has looked for more sophisticated roles for which she could get paid a lot more. But this movie belonged to Tusshar Kapoor, since he has gone to act in superhit films such as the humorous dumb character Lucky in Golmaal, Golmaal Returns, Golmaal 3 and an actor in The Dirty Picture alongside Vidya Balan.
