Yaadein was Kareena’s third film in her Bollywood career and her first with a well reputed production banner. Subhash Ghai, the iconic filmmaker decided to cast her in the leading role because he felt that she would suit the requirements of the role completely, as per the script which he had written. Whereas, Hrithik Roshan was gaining immense popularity by the day as the new ‘chocolate boy’ of Bollywood and Ghai wished to work with him.
The story revolves around Kareena’s father Raj, played by Jackie Shroff and his three daughters. Kareena is named Isha and is the youngest of them all. She is the only one who does not believe in love. Her mother died in a car accident in the past. Whereas, the first daughter Avantika goes through an arranged marriage. The second daughter suffers a divorce following a love marriage. Thus Raj becomes averse to the idea of love and relationships and becomes extremely protective of his daughters, especially Isha.
But Isha happens to fall in love with Ronit, the son of L K Malhotra. L K Malhotra is the younger brother of J K Malhotra, one of Raj’s best friends and the owner of a well reputed business empire. Raj however, does not approve of their relationship because of the family’s poor history in this area. Kareena for the first time played the role of an obedient daughter and broke up with Ronit, the character played by Hrithik.
Yet, since Ronit is as good as a son to Raj and tries to make him marry a daughter of another business tycoon. Ronit continues to be unhappy because he wants no one else but Isha, yet Isha tells him not to go against this even though she too continues to love him more than any other girl. Raj gets finally convinced that Ronit and Isha are meant for each other, but he had to go through a tough time before JK Malhotra, Ronit’s uncle is also convinced about the relationship to be converted into marriage.
Like any other normal Hindi movie, this one too has a happy ending as Ronit and Isha get married. Kareena and Hrithik’s performances were average and consequently the movie was a surprise flop, considering it was a Subhash Ghai film. Yet the songs are so melodious that they are remembered till date.
